Chapter Eighty-Seven: The Betrayal of the Great Dao? The Mountain and Sea Realm
The two beings looked at him in astonishment.
“So you know this tower?”
The golden being, who called himself Golden Sea, bowed respectfully. “Honored envoy, we do not know this pagoda. We have only heard that, in ages beyond counting, our realm suffered a calamity that shook heaven and earth. Then a being of the Great Way appeared, bearing the status of the supreme envoy of the Primal Origin, and used a treasure of the Primal Origin to suppress heaven and earth for us, sparing our world from total destruction.”
He hesitated, then continued, “According to the elders who lived through that disaster, that treasure, wielded by the Great Way, shone with purple radiance that could subdue all worlds. It was a supreme treasure of the ten thousand realms, nearly the same as the one you possess. It was bestowed upon the Great Way by the supreme being to suppress heaven and earth, allowing those of us born of that great world to cultivate to the level of primordial unity more easily, without any limit on our numbers.”
Pangu and Moke, who had been prostrate on the ground, were stunned by these words. The treasure of the Lord of the Dao had actually fallen into the hands of a Great Way, and that being had even dared to impersonate the Lord’s envoy. How could such a thing be possible?
As beings of the boundless primordial realm, they naturally understood that the Lord of the Dao could not possibly bestow any treasure of the Primal Origin, much less appoint any supreme envoy.
The two exchanged glances, but neither dared ask aloud.
Chenxing pondered for a long while before suddenly understanding.
So that was it.
He could not help but smile bitterly.
Before Chenxing had recovered the memories of his former self, he had often played in dreams. Once, out of curiosity, he had taken a small purple dagger and stabbed at the barrier of the Primal Origin.
Of course, at that time, Chenxing did not know that the thing trapping him in that tiny space was called the barrier of the Primal Origin.
He had only wanted to see whether he could pierce it. That dagger was, among all his possessions, the one thing that looked the sharpest.
To his surprise, the dagger really did thrust outward, but his hand was still held back. In a burst of irritation, Chenxing drove the dagger completely through the veil of light and hurled it away.
Now, remembering all this, Chenxing felt a faint headache. The dagger he had thrown away was nothing more than a low-grade spirit treasure of the Primal Origin. Yet if such a treasure were used to suppress a world, it could allow the Great Way of that world to transcend the fruit of primordial unity and reach a higher plane.
At this moment, he regretted sealing away his great power so completely. He had not expected that a Great Way of some world, after stumbling upon a treasure he had lost, would dare to use it on its own.
Now that world no longer had any limit on the number who could break through to primordial unity. It was easy to imagine that the Great Way there had already transcended beyond the Sovereign of Primordial Unity.
It seemed he truly needed to find a way to unseal his strength as soon as possible.
He had originally sealed his power in order to rescue his parents. Later, through a clever trick, he had let the little demoness Nuwa bring them out.
After the family was reunited, he had slackened his resolve to temper his Dao heart. Though he still hoped to perfect it soon, so that he could also raise the cultivation of the two women and have children, thereby fulfilling his mother’s wish to become a grandmother, the truth was that Chenxing had not been in any great hurry.
But now things were different. If a Great Way had truly betrayed him and then transcended beyond the boundless primordial realm to reach the level of the Sovereign of Primordial Unity, then although such a being still could not do anything to him while he possessed the Tower of Primal Origin, it would be all too easy for that being to destroy a great world and slay a saint of the Dao.
The troublesome part was that, although he was not afraid of that Great Way, he also could not truly do anything to it in his present state. After all, he was only at the quasi-saint stage now. It seemed he really had to think of a plan.
If the Great Way of that world knew that Golden Sea had casually sold him out to the Lord of the Primal Origin, it would surely be beyond enraged. Wasn’t that the same as digging its own grave?
Golden Sea naturally knew nothing of this. He assumed that since Chenxing also possessed a treasure of the Primal Origin, he must be like the Great Way of his own world, a messenger of the supreme being. After all, it was a treasure of the Primal Origin—how many people could possibly possess one?
After pondering for a long while, Chenxing decided to face them temporarily in the guise of the supreme envoy. That way, he would also spare the people of Stone Village from endlessly speculating about his identity.
After sending a secret transmission to Pangu and Moke with further instructions, he addressed the two before him. “You two sought to seize the source of the Great Way and nearly caused a middle world to be destroyed. I shall now seal your consciousness for eighty-one cosmic eras. Do you submit?”
Golden Sea and Silver Immortal were alarmed at once and hurriedly knelt to the ground, knocking their heads in supplication. “Honored envoy, we have indeed committed grave wrongs, but it was only because our cultivation was suppressed too severely after entering this realm, and in order to adapt to this world that we made our mistake. We beg you to investigate this matter carefully!”
Huang had been listening all along. Though astonished by his master’s extraordinary identity, he felt it was only to be expected. Now, seeing Golden Sea beg for mercy, he was filled with fury and shouted, “You make it sound so simple, but do you know how many of our world’s prodigies you have killed? Our immortal domain is shattered, and the nine heavens and ten lands remain only in fragments. Do you think a mere ‘we were wrong’ can make up for that?”
The people of Stone Village were instantly inflamed, and Second Fierce and the others howled that the two should be completely obliterated.
Chenxing glanced at them helplessly, then asked again, “Why did you come to this world? The cultivation environment here is far inferior to yours. Coming here seems to offer you no benefit at all.”
He truly found this strange.
Golden Sea and Silver Immortal exchanged a glance, then said with resignation, “Over the past million years, the cultivation speed of the cultivators in our world suddenly slowed. After our elders consulted the Primal Origin treasure that suppresses our world, they discovered that the Great Way of our heaven and earth had actually vanished a million years ago.
“Without the Great Way, cultivators no longer have the foundation of the Great Way, and it becomes far harder for primordial unity to appear. In desperation, the ten of us saintly beings, apart from the Grand Elder and the Second Elder, were each sent to five worlds to search for traces of the Great Way and complete our world. The two of us were assigned to this realm.”
Having spoken all the reasons in one breath, Golden Sea fell silent and awaited Chenxing’s judgment.
Chenxing listened to the explanation and felt his head grow heavy. He covered it with one hand and smiled bitterly to himself. What in the world was this?
A Great Way that had betrayed him was now playing at disappearing.
And saints of the Dao were roaming the chaos in search of a Great Way.
The more he thought about it, the more he wanted to collapse. He could not help blaming his former self. If that fellow had not run off to Earth to fool around, none of this would have happened, would it?
Then again, if he had not gone to Earth, what would have become of him? In any case, once his cultivation was restored, everything would naturally return to the proper track. No matter how chaotic things became, the ten thousand realms could not be destroyed overnight.
With this thought, his heart settled, and he asked the final question. “What is your world called?”
As he asked, Chenxing wore an expression of curious interest.
Golden Sea and the other remained silent for a long while before replying, “The Sea and Mountain Realm. It is also called the World of War.”
Chenxing immediately understood.
No wonder he had not thought of it. Among the Primal Origin, when had there ever been a world he did not know?
So it was that great world abandoned by his former self, the only world in which the Great Way was not formed from a thought of the Lord of the Primal Origin.
He sighed inwardly, blaming his former self all the more. Simply because someone in that world had attained the fruit of the Great Way and, in doing so, slightly exceeded his control, that fellow intended to destroy an entire great world. It was indeed far too overbearing.
No wonder that Great Way had dared, on its own initiative, to use a Primal Origin spirit treasure it had obtained by chance to suppress its world. It had clearly been driven to the brink.
And to think it even carried the title of supreme envoy. That made it plain that it had never intended to stand against him in the first place.
With a sigh, Chenxing shook his head. “I will help you settle this matter. But wrong is wrong, and punishment must still be given. You shall remain in the Tower of Primal Origin for eighty-one cosmic eras.”
Golden Sea and the other were overjoyed at once, and hurriedly kowtowed in gratitude. “We thank the envoy for his great kindness. So long as we can find traces of the Great Way, the two of us are willing to accept punishment!”
Having said this, they bowed three more times. Then, as two streaks of gold and silver light, they shot into the Tower of Primal Origin.
