Chapter 6: Blessings Too Great to Bear
Lin Muxue’s home was situated in the English Manor, southwest of Yong City.
This was an upscale villa community nestled within the national wetland park, an environment that could rightfully claim to be the finest in all of Yong City. Within the neighborhood, not only did flowers and trees compete in beauty throughout the four seasons, but there were also babbling streams, rippling lakes, and even an awe-inspiring miniature waterfall.
The entire community resembled a world from a fairy tale, breathtakingly beautiful to the extreme. Naturally, the property prices here were equally extravagant.
As security guards of the English Manor, their experience far surpassed that of guards in other neighborhoods. At the very least, when it came to luxury cars, they had seen more than enough to develop a sense of indifferent composure.
Yet today, when several of the security guards saw the approaching vehicles in the distance, astonishment broke through their practiced calm.
For the vehicle that stopped at the entrance of the English Manor was not a multimillion luxury car or a supercar, but a battered electric scooter that, at best, would fetch three or four hundred yuan on the secondhand market.
Were it not for the fact that both a Mercedes business van and a Rolls-Royce Phantom accompanied this scooter, serving as its escort, and were it not for the fact that Lin Muxue herself, a legend in Yong City’s business circles, was seated on its rear seat, the guards would have chased away the man riding the scooter without hesitation.
Seeing the guards frozen in place, Lin Muxue raised an eyebrow, her expression cold as she snapped, “What are you all standing around for? Hurry up and raise the barrier and let us in!”
When facing other men, Lin Muxue reverted to her icy queen demeanor. Her smiles and moments of shyness were reserved solely for Li Sicheng.
Startled by her command, the security guards quickly raised the barrier to let Li Sicheng and Lin Muxue pass.
Watching the battered scooter sandwiched between the Mercedes van and the Rolls-Royce fade into the distance, the guards couldn’t help but mutter among themselves:
“Leaving aside the Mercedes and the Rolls, and choosing to ride a broken-down electric scooter... I really don’t get how rich people think!”
“A Mercedes clearing the way, a Rolls bringing up the rear, and riding with a true beauty—this must be the ultimate form of electric scooter riding! Compared to him, all the years I’ve spent on a scooter were for nothing!”
“If I’m not mistaken, the one riding with him was the Ice Queen, Lin Muxue, wasn’t it? Rumor has it she’s extremely difficult to get along with, especially towards men! Who is that guy, to make Lin Muxue sit on his battered scooter?”
Unaware of the gossip swirling behind them, Li Sicheng and Lin Muxue were quietly chatting as they went along.
“Sicheng, now that you’re in Yong City, you must stay a while and let me properly host you. Not only did you save me back then, but you also advised me to come to Yong City to develop my business… In truth, everything I’ve achieved today is because of you!” Lin Muxue spoke with heartfelt gratitude.
Ever since her career had taken off, Lin Muxue had wanted to repay Li Sicheng’s kindness. Now that she finally had the chance, she was in no mood to let it pass so easily.
Li Sicheng smiled, glancing around at the scenery within the English Manor as he replied, “I won’t be leaving Yong City for two or three years at least. In the days to come, I’ll inevitably need your help with many things.”
“That’s not a problem at all! It’s my honor to be of service to you.” Lin Muxue wasn’t just being polite—her expression was utterly sincere. Then her eyes lit up with anticipation as she probed, “Sicheng, since you’ll be staying in Yong City for several years, why not live at my place? That way, it’ll be easier for me to look after you.”
“Well…” Li Sicheng didn’t answer right away, instead furrowing his brow in thought.
Lin Muxue didn’t press him, but waited quietly for his response.
Several minutes passed before Li Sicheng finally spoke. “This place of yours is indeed excellent. The mountains, the lakes—all naturally formed, not man-made. And the way the mountains embrace the water and gather the wind and energy—this is truly a blessed site. Living here would benefit my health greatly. But there’s just one issue…”
“What issue?” Lin Muxue could no longer stay calm and asked anxiously.
Li Sicheng replied, “The problem is the houses here are too well-built, too luxurious!”
“Huh?” Lin Muxue was stunned. “How can that be a problem?”
Li Sicheng explained, “My fate has only just been reshaped and I’m still in a period of recovery. I can’t enjoy fine things right now. Doing so would not only hinder my recovery, but might even bring unexpected trouble. There’s an old saying—‘Some blessings are too great to bear’—that’s my current predicament…”
“Fate?” Lin Muxue was growing more and more confused.
“Everyone has a destined fate, something innate. It’s tied to one’s birthdate, gender, family background, and so on, and it affects the fortune and misfortune of one’s life…” Li Sicheng gave a brief explanation, then his eyes suddenly brightened as he asked, “Muxue, your villa has a basement, doesn’t it?”
“Basement? Yes, why?” Lin Muxue was taken aback, unable to follow the sudden change in topic.
“That’s perfect!” Li Sicheng said happily. “I can stay at your place, but only if I’m allowed to live in the basement!”
At this, Lin Muxue became anxious. “How could that be? My house has plenty of rooms—take your pick! If I made you stay in the basement, wouldn’t that make me ungrateful?”
“I can only stay in the basement,” Li Sicheng insisted, shaking his head. “Didn’t you hear what I just said? Right now, I simply can’t handle anything too nice.”
Lin Muxue tried to persuade him, “But the basement is damp and stuffy—it wouldn’t be comfortable at all. I’ve always used it for storage, and it’s a mess…”
To her surprise, her words only made Li Sicheng more satisfied. “Damp and stuffy? A messy storeroom? That’s even better!”
Given his current situation, living in the villa was out of the question—who knew what accidents might befall him. But the unparalleled feng shui of the English Manor was too good to give up, so he’d come up with this compromise. The worse the basement’s condition, the better it suited him.
“This…” Lin Muxue was at a loss for words, unsure how to persuade him otherwise.
After that, she fell silent, frowning as she racked her brain for a solution. How could she keep Li Sicheng in her home without having him sleep in the basement? The problem gave her a headache.
A few minutes passed, but before Lin Muxue could come up with an answer, Li Sicheng stopped the electric scooter.
“What’s wrong? Is there a problem?” Lin Muxue, startled from her thoughts, asked in confusion.
Li Sicheng pointed at the villa ahead. “No problem—we’ve arrived at your house.”
Lin Muxue looked ahead and, sure enough, it was her home. She was surprised. “How did you know this villa was mine?”
Li Sicheng smiled. “Of all the places in the neighborhood, this one suits you best. If I’m not mistaken, when you came to buy a house here, you fell in love with this villa at first sight, didn’t you? You didn’t even look at any of the others.”
Lin Muxue’s mouth fell open in shock.
Li Sicheng’s words were exactly right.
When she’d come here, she’d indeed chosen this villa at first glance, not even considering any others.
But soon, she recovered from her surprise and laughed, saying, “I almost forgot—you’re hardly an ordinary person. Figuring out which villa is mine must be child’s play for you. After all, when we first met, you predicted my career trajectory for the next few years with complete accuracy…”
