Chapter 142: His Downfall Was Deserved
Although Xiao Liu and the others had been threatened, none of them dared show any anger. They knew perfectly well that this beautiful woman was absolutely capable of doing exactly what she had threatened. If they angered her, they would certainly suffer for it.
For one thing, just looking at the group of lean, formidable female bodyguards surrounding her was enough to make Xiao Liu and the others’ legs tremble.
It was not that they were afraid of the bodyguards themselves. They simply understood that anyone who could afford to hire so many female bodyguards for personal protection was certainly no ordinary person—and definitely not someone they could afford to offend.
Xiao Liu and the others hurriedly plastered smiles across their faces, preparing to explain themselves.
Before they could say a word, however, the middle-aged man who had entered with the beautiful woman—dressed in a suit and wearing gold-rimmed glasses—spoke first.
“I am Attorney Zhou Rong. This is my business card. We are here on behalf of my employer’s younger brother. According to the information we have received, my employer’s brother was accused of being an arson suspect without a shred of evidence. What you have done is a blatant violation of the law. I demand that you release him immediately. In addition, I will be lodging a formal protest with the municipal public security bureau over this matter...”
“Attorney Zhou Rong? Why does that name sound so familiar?”
“I remember now! Isn’t there a nationally renowned lawyer named Zhou Rong here in Yongcheng?”
“That’s right! He’s Zhou Rong, one of the finest lawyers in the entire country! I’ve seen his photograph in the newspapers before. But doesn’t he usually handle major cases? Why would he lower himself to come here and bail someone out?”
Xiao Liu and the others were nearly scared senseless.
Good heavens! You’re one of the country’s top lawyers. Instead of handling your mountain of major cases, you’ve come all the way to our police station to demand someone’s release. What on earth are we supposed to make of that?
Shocked though he was, Xiao Liu reacted quickly. Afraid of angering these people, whom they absolutely could not afford to offend, he hurriedly asked, “The student you’re looking for—is his name Li Sichen?”
“That’s right. It’s him. Release him at once!” the beautiful woman roared once again.
Xiao Liu wore a bitter expression. “He isn’t at our station. Captain Tan from the Major Crimes Unit came by just now and took him away.”
The beautiful woman froze. “Captain Tan? Which Captain Tan? Tan Ying?”
“That’s right,” Xiao Liu replied, nodding repeatedly.
“Why would Tan Ying come here? Could Tan Xiaoxiao have asked her to come? No, I need to call and make sure.”
After murmuring to herself for a moment, the beautiful woman held out her hand. The secretary standing beside her immediately passed her a phone.
She found Tan Ying’s number in her contacts and pressed the call button.
The call was answered almost immediately. Tan Ying’s booming voice was loud enough for everyone in the station to hear.
“Oh, isn’t this Chairman Lin? What’s up?”
From Tan Ying’s tone, it was obvious that she knew the beautiful woman—and that they were on quite friendly terms.
That beautiful woman was none other than Lin Muyue.
Lin Siyu and Tan Xiaoxiao were close friends, so Lin Muyue and Tan Ying naturally knew each other as well. Since they were around the same age and shared several interests, the two women had become very good friends. Of course, when it came to seniority, each family followed its own system.
Lin Muyue was worried about Li Sichen and had no time for idle chatter. She went straight to the point.
“Tell me, is Li Sichen with you?”
“No. He said he was going to take the subway, so I dropped him at the station and we went our separate ways. Why? Do you know this Li Sichen too?”
“Yes, I do,” Lin Muyue replied with a nod.
Once she had confirmed that Li Sichen was safe, the weight that had been pressing on her heart finally lifted. She knew perfectly well that, given Li Sichen’s abilities, a little police station could never hold him. But concern had clouded her judgment.
After exchanging a few more words with Tan Ying, Lin Muyue ended the call.
Now that she knew Li Sichen was safe and sound, there was no reason for her to remain. She turned and left immediately, leaving behind a group of stunned police officers who still had not quite figured out what had happened.
“Who was that woman? She’s incredibly beautiful, and she had so many female bodyguards with her. Is she some famous actress?”
“Anyone who can bring Attorney Zhou Rong into the matter is definitely no ordinary person!”
“Wait, I think I heard Captain Tan call her Chairman Lin. My God... Could she be Lin Muyue, the legendary businesswoman of Yongcheng who single-handedly created the Meihua Miracle?”
“It’s possible! I’ve heard for years that the chairman of Meihua Group, Lin Muyue, is a stunningly beautiful woman. Now that I’ve seen her, it’s true! With that face, figure, and bearing, she puts many of the country’s actresses to shame!”
While the officers gossiped about Lin Muyue’s identity, Xiao Liu collapsed into a chair and gave a bitter laugh. Inwardly, he sighed for Wang Guotao.
“Oh, Director Wang... Whom could you have offended? Why did you have to provoke Li Sichen? Never mind how much of a jinx and a walking disaster that kid is—the fact that he can get people like Tan Ying and Lin Muyue to intervene on his behalf is already enough to show that he isn’t someone you can afford to provoke. You really brought this disaster upon yourself.”
About ten minutes after Lin Muyue and the others left, several more people stormed into the police station.
This time, Xiao Liu and the others recognized the man leading them.
It was Lu Han, the owner of Hongda Properties—and the father of Lu Changxing.
“President Lu, what brings you here? Don’t tell me you’re here to demand that we release someone too?” Xiao Liu asked in astonishment.
Others might not have known, but Xiao Liu had once heard Wang Guotao describe how Li Sichen had beaten Lei Shao, Lu Changxing, and the others badly. That was precisely why Wang Guotao had brought Li Sichen back to the station to “assist with an investigation.” In the end, it had also brought Wang Guotao bad luck, and the disciplinary inspection authorities had taken him away for questioning.
If Lu Han had also come to demand Li Sichen’s release, the situation would have been downright ironic.
“Release someone? Who are you talking about?” Lu Han asked blankly. Then he waved his hand angrily and shouted, “Where is the man who injured my son?”
“Uh...”
At that, Xiao Liu understood. Lu Han had not come to demand anyone’s release. He had come looking for trouble.
After forcing out a bitter laugh, Xiao Liu answered, “He’s already gone.”
Lu Han exploded on the spot.
“Gone? How did he get away? Did you release him? Damn it! He’s the criminal who injured my son! How could you let him go? This is dereliction of duty!”
Are we supposed to keep him here? That kid is a walking disaster! If he stayed here any longer, all of us might have ended up in trouble!
Several of the officers could only smile bitterly.
Out of goodwill, they began trying to persuade him.
“President Lu, just let the matter of your son being beaten go. You can’t afford to pursue it.”
“That’s right, President Lu. We’re saying this for your own good. It would be best to forget the whole thing.”
“So what if he took one beating? That’s still better than losing your fortune—and your life!”
Xiao Liu and the others had witnessed how terrifying Li Sichen could be, but Lu Han had not. Hearing their well-intentioned advice nearly made his lungs burst with rage.
After glaring at the officers, Lu Han spun around and strode out of the police station.
As he walked, he muttered through clenched teeth, “Damn these cops. They’re just trying to shirk responsibility! Fine. If I can’t count on you, I’ll deal with that kid myself! Anyone who bullies my son will pay for it! You expect me to swallow this humiliation? Not a chance!”
