024 The Deal
Luo Yingying exclaimed in astonishment, “You know Chen Yuannan?”
Tong Shao shook his head, “Chen Yuannan is a big shot. How could I have the privilege of knowing him? But I do know Boss Chai, and I can reach Chen Yuannan through him.”
Luo Yingying was overjoyed. “Then let’s go right away!”
At a mahjong parlor, Tong Shao and Luo Yingying found Boss Chai. To show his sincerity, Tong Shao even brought a box of expensive Pu’er tea before stating his request.
“Who do you want to kill?” Boss Chai paused his play and looked at Tong Shao in surprise.
“Lin Qi, a food delivery guy…”
Before Tong Shao could finish, Boss Chai shook his head vigorously. “You’d better find someone else. I can’t afford to mess with him!”
Both Tong Shao and Luo Yingying were shocked. Just a deliveryman, yet Boss Chai said he couldn’t afford to cross him?
Out of respect for the Pu’er tea, Boss Chai spoke gravely, “You’re talking about Lin Qi from the delivery station on Construction Street, right?”
“Yes, that’s him!” Luo Yingying nodded immediately. “Boss Chai, you know him?”
Boss Chai sighed. “So it really is him… I don’t care what grudge you have against him, but I advise you to give up. His background is not simple. Don’t be fooled by his job—Tang Long is backing him.”
Of course, Tong Shao and Luo Yingying knew who Tang Long was—one of Haitong City’s commercial giants.
But how could that be possible?
Luo Yingying said, “Boss Chai, you must be mistaken. I’ve been married to Lin Qi for three years—how could I not know if he has such connections? If he did, he wouldn’t have been fired from Longyue Corporation!”
Tong Shao chimed in, “Exactly. If Tang Long was supporting him, would he have ended up in detention for fifteen days?”
Boss Chai repeatedly confirmed Luo Yingying’s identity and whether Lin Qi had really been detained.
The answer was clear.
It was all true.
Indeed, as Lin Qi’s wife for three years, how could she not know him inside out? If he truly had Tang Long’s backing, how could he have been fired or detained?
Clearly, the mistake was Boss Chai’s.
He had overthought things.
He recalled how respectful he had been to Lin Qi at Boiling Point Bar and felt somewhat ridiculous.
“Fine, I’ll take you to see Brother Nan,” Boss Chai said with a wave of his hand.
Brother Nan was, of course, Chen Yuannan.
The undisputed kingpin of the southern city’s underworld, idolized by countless thugs.
Boss Chai was just a local tough, good for roughing people up. When it came to murder, only Chen Yuannan was up to the task.
In a private suite at an upscale club, Boss Chai, Luo Yingying, and Tong Shao met Chen Yuannan.
A middle-aged man with gold-rimmed glasses, genteel in appearance, always dressed in a black Zhongshan suit.
Chen Yuannan was in a foul mood recently.
The Black Bear from the north had been provoking him repeatedly, even arranging fights on his own turf. While Chen Yuannan had managed to outwit him and get him thrown in detention, this was only a temporary fix.
With the Black Bear due for release soon, he would surely seek revenge. Then what? Privately, Chen Yuannan had compared their strengths and knew he was no match. Should a fight break out, he would be doomed—a thought that had left him so anxious his hair was nearly falling out.
At that moment, he sat in the suite as two young women cautiously massaged him.
Boss Chai stood before him and relayed the matter concerning Lin Qi.
“To kill a deliveryman? That’s easy…” Chen Yuannan replied coolly. “A flat fee: five hundred thousand.”
Tong Shao immediately said, “Brother Nan, I’ll transfer the money to you right now.”
With half a million in hand, Chen Yuannan was about to assign two of his men to handle the job.
But Boss Chai stopped him. “Brother Nan, two might not be enough…”
He then recounted his earlier experience.
“More than ten security guards in the bar couldn’t handle him?” Chen Yuannan narrowed his eyes. “Interesting… In that case, I’ll deal with him myself.”
Boss Chai flattered him at once, “If you’re taking action, Brother Nan, even ten Lin Qis wouldn’t stand a chance!”
“Of course, if I go in person, the price changes… At least a million,” Chen Yuannan said, looking at Tong Shao.
A million?
Tong Shao’s heart skipped a beat. Though he was a rich second-generation heir, he still needed to ask his family for money. Coming up with a million in one go wasn’t easy—the previous five hundred thousand had been all his hard-earned savings.
Luo Yingying tugged gently at Tong Shao’s sleeve and whispered, “Borrow from your friends. If you can pull this off, I’ll marry you—and I won’t ask for a dowry.”
For the sake of his sister’s happiness and the family’s honor, Luo Yingying was going all in.
Tong Shao was overjoyed. For a million, he could win the beauty’s heart—why not?
He agreed on the spot. With help from various sources, he finally scraped together a million and handed it over to Chen Yuannan right then and there.
“Very good.” Chen Yuannan said indifferently as he received the money. “Once Lin Qi is out, I’ll strike.”
Tong Shao and Luo Yingying thanked him profusely.
