Chapter 109: The Tournament Begins
The next day, Liu Feng and the two companions rose early, quickly freshened up, had breakfast, and made their way toward the martial arena.
Upon arriving beside the stage, they saw it was already packed with people—young and old, men and women alike. The grandstands, with over a hundred thousand seats, were completely full.
The three proceeded to the competitors’ area, a section specially reserved for those taking part in the contest. They found seats and settled down, waiting for the tournament to commence.
“It seems even more people have entered the competition than we expected,” Zhao Jun remarked, surprised as he looked at the packed competitor section.
“I estimate there must be at least two thousand participants,” Zhao Bochao added, astonished by the sheer number of young prodigies.
Liu Feng remained calm and said, “Think about it: just in Nanzhou City alone, more than ten have registered. Our Qingyu Kingdom has fifty or sixty cities of similar size to Nanzhou. By that count, Qingyu has five to six hundred participants. Other countries likely have similar numbers.”
“That makes sense then,” Zhao Jun nodded in agreement.
“Look! The Emperor has arrived! Everyone, rise!” Just as the three were speaking, a voice rang out.
Liu Feng stood up and saw a grand procession approaching from afar. At the front were two riders on magnificent steeds, followed by a luxurious carriage drawn by ten horses, flanked by guards.
A tall, stout middle-aged man in a yellow robe stepped out of the carriage. His stern features were complemented by eyes shining like stars.
He made his way to a special elevated platform near the arena, reserved for the Emperor, generals, and city lords. Surveying the cheering crowd, he gently pressed his palms downward to calm them.
After a moment, he spoke, “I am pleased to hold this Four-Nation Alliance Tournament together with the Mengyue, Tianchen, and Lanshuang Kingdoms. The purpose of this competition is to select exceptionally gifted young talents and provide them with superior cultivation resources.”
The crowd erupted in cheers at his words.
Once the enthusiasm settled, the Emperor continued, “There is even better news: the Tianyuan Sect will send senior masters to observe. If any participant catches their eye, they will have the chance to soar to unprecedented heights in one step. That is all I have to say. I now hand over the tournament proceedings to the city lord.”
“The Tianyuan Sect is one of the Ten Great Sects of the Wild Dragon Domain,” whispered a spectator nearby. “Our Qingyu Kingdom falls under their jurisdiction.”
“If one could join the Tianyuan Sect, the cultivation resources would be hundreds of times better than those of any sect in Qingyu. It would truly be a leap to the heavens.”
“But being noticed by the Tianyuan Sect is no easy feat. Within their domain alone, there are hundreds of countries like Qingyu, each filled with countless geniuses. The talents from these four nations may not even catch their eye.”
The crowd buzzed with discussion following the Emperor’s remarks.
At that moment, the City Lord of Tiancheng stepped onto the platform and announced in a booming voice, “The rules of the tournament are simple. Opponents will be matched by drawing lots. Two will fight, and the battle ends only when one side admits defeat. Otherwise, combat may continue indefinitely. This means there may be casualties.”
After a brief pause, he added, “If anyone regrets entering, they may withdraw now. Once on the stage, injuries or deaths are at their own risk. If there are no objections, the competitors may draw their lots.”
He then produced a large box filled with numbered tokens.
Liu Feng and his companions stood and moved forward with the others to draw their numbers.
“What are your numbers? Mine’s number thirty,” Zhao Jun asked curiously, glancing at Liu Feng and Zhao Bochao’s tokens.
“I’m number fifty.”
“I’m number five hundred,” replied Zhao Bochao and Liu Feng respectively.
“Drawing is complete. I hereby announce the start of the Four-Nation Alliance Tournament,” the City Lord declared, looking over the gathered contestants. “Number one and number two will begin.”
Two young men immediately stepped onto the arena floor, their eyes locked on each other.
“Boom! Boom!”
At the command, they sprang forward. One wielded a long blade, slashing swiftly with a fierce gleam that flashed before his opponent’s eyes.
The other flipped his palm, summoning a massive axe, which he swung single-handedly to meet the oncoming blade.
“Clang!”
Sparks flew as the blade struck the axe’s head, the impact sending the blade flying upward. The axe-wielder pressed forward with a follow-up chop.
The wind whistled as the great axe descended towards the swordsman’s head.
“I surrender!” the swordsman quickly shouted as the axe halted just above him.
Both stepped down from the stage. The axe-wielder approached the City Lord to register his name, securing his place in the next round.
“That match was over too quickly—just two moves,” someone in the crowd murmured.
“I think it’s because the strength gap was too great,” another replied.
The audience watched in disbelief as over twenty more pairs climbed the stage, each resolving their matches within a few moves.
“Zhao Jun, be careful. If you feel it’s not working, admit defeat quickly. Don’t stubbornly hold on,” Liu Feng and Zhao Bochao advised as Zhao Jun stepped onto the stage.
They announced their names and faced each other.
At the signal, Zhao Jun struck first, forming his palm like a blade and slashing fiercely. A sharp blade of energy shot forth.
His opponent clenched his palm into a fist, releasing a powerful force to meet the blade.
“Bang!”
The fist and blade collided and shattered midair. The opponent staggered back under Zhao Jun’s pressure.
Seizing the moment, Zhao Jun flashed forward, unleashing a furious punch that left a massive fist-shaped afterimage barreling toward his adversary. The blow sent the opponent tumbling off the platformI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
