“Huh?” Mo Xing was momentarily stunned.

“It’s better for two people to be on duty,” Shi Yan said. “That way, we can look out for each other.”

“I... I didn’t mean it like that...” Mo Xing scratched his head, his face flushing slightly. Thankfully, the darkness of night concealed it from the others.

Shi Yan had suggested being on duty together... Could there be another meaning behind this?

“Yes, yes! The two of you take the first shift!” Wu Danche seemed to have caught on to something. “Well then, Brother Ling Buyu and I will head back to the tent and get some sleep! Remember to wake us in five hours for the next shift!”

“Eh? You decided that quickly?” Ling Buyu sounded surprised, but Wu Danche had already slung an arm around his shoulder.

“Of course! The student council is always efficient!” Wu Danche grinned.

“Huh? What does this have to do with the student council?” Ling Buyu was completely lost.

“Never mind, let’s rest first and leave these two to their slow, gentle conversation!” Wu Danche added quietly.

“Oh, I see. Well, let’s go rest then!” Ling Buyu nodded, finally grasping the implication.

When Wu Danche and Ling Buyu returned to the tent, Shi Yan rose from her original spot and moved closer. The two of them sat in silence by the campfire for a while.

Mo Xing’s heart was in turmoil...

Dear heavens, what should I talk about?

So awkward, so awkward!

“Mo Xing...” Shi Yan softly called his name.

“Um... yes?” Mo Xing’s cheeks reddened.

“Let’s talk for a bit...” Shi Yan said again.

“I... I don’t know what to talk about...” Mo Xing admitted, scratching his head in embarrassment. He truly didn’t know how to chat with girls...

Talk about celebrities?

Gossip?

Food?

Fashion?

Oh, this is too hard!

“Anything is fine,” Shi Yan replied calmly.

“Uh...” Mo Xing hesitated. “I feel like... the wind isn’t too strong tonight...”

He forced out a sentence, immediately regretting it as soon as the words left his mouth.

What a strange thing to say!

Shi Yan was taken aback, then smiled.

“That’s because we’re on the sheltered side of the slope.”

“Right, right!” Mo Xing scratched his head again in embarrassment. Their camp was indeed set behind a small hill. “You’re really smart, Shi Yan...”

“Hahaha, Mo Xing, is this how you usually compliment people?” Shi Yan smiled faintly.

“No, not at all. I don’t usually compliment people...” Mo Xing shook his head.

“Why not?” Shi Yan leaned in to ask.

“Maybe... because you’re special,” Mo Xing replied.

“Hmm...” Shi Yan hesitated for a moment. “Can I ask you something?”

“Sure, go ahead,” Mo Xing nodded.

“Do you think I...” Shi Yan trailed off.

“Think you what...” Mo Xing paused, feeling the conversation was veering into sensitive territory. Was she about to ask if they were suited to be a couple or something?

But Shi Yan’s next question caught him off guard:

“Do you think I’m worthy of your trust?” Shi Yan asked.

“Oh... I didn’t expect that...” Mo Xing turned to her. “How should I put it... I think you’re very trustworthy. After all, you’re one of the few friends I have.”

“Then... if you have more friends in the future, will I still be as worthy of your trust as I am now?” Shi Yan asked.

“You will. You always will,” Mo Xing replied earnestly. After all, the one before him was the one in his heart; when you like someone, you naturally trust them...

“Actually, I... I’m not an ordinary person...” Shi Yan stammered.

“Uh...” Mo Xing scratched his head, not quite understanding. “Well, we all have the power of the Dragon God, so none of us are ordinary, I guess.”

“No, that’s not what I mean...” Shi Yan bit her lip.

“I don’t get it...” Mo Xing was lost.

“I mean, if one day... I’m gone, you probably wouldn’t miss me too much, right?”

“Huh? Why would you say that?” Mo Xing frowned. “You’ll always be here, you’ll always be fine!”

“Mm... just take it as me asking casually...” Shi Yan lowered her head, deep in thought.

“All right...” Mo Xing scratched his head, and the two fell into silence once more.

Mo Xing’s heart beat wildly. He didn’t understand why Shi Yan was asking these things. Maybe she was testing him? Who knew if his answers would affect her impression of him...

“Awooo—”

Suddenly, a wolf’s howl pierced the night. Mo Xing and Shi Yan exchanged a glance and spoke in unison: “Wolves!”

They both scrambled up, and in the distance, three figures could be seen fleeing from a massive wolf. Even more astonishing, the wolf was running upright on its hind legs. Mo Xing was taken aback, but then reminded himself that in another world, anything was possible.

A wolf running on two legs... Well, that was still within reason.

“Let’s go help them!” Mo Xing said.

“No, if we both leave, no one will be guarding the camp,” Shi Yan shook her head. “If something happens to the others while they sleep, it’ll be disastrous.”

“Then... then I’ll go alone!” Mo Xing said. “You stay here.”

“That’s too dangerous. The three of them can’t handle that giant wolf, and you alone might not make a difference either!” Shi Yan analyzed. “That giant wolf is probably the one Dongjun mentioned—it doesn’t look like any ordinary beast!”

“Then what should we do? We can’t just stand by...” Mo Xing said anxiously.

“Use ranged attacks!” Shi Yan drew her twin guns and fired two shots in that direction. Twin streams of black and white energy shot forth.

Explosive Double Shot!

She hit the giant wolf dead on!

“Awooo—” The massive wolf stopped, looking around warily.

“Great shooting!” Mo Xing praised her, then took out the Divine Frost from his storage ring and asked, “What should I do?”

“Throw ice blades to its left and right!” Shi Yan fired two more bullets.

“Got it!” Mo Xing gathered water elements and slashed out several sharp, curved ice blades.

Frostwater: Whirling Strike!

Crackling and crashing, the fierce Explosive Double Shots pounded the giant wolf’s body, while the Frostwater: Whirling Strike spun and slashed. The wolf ran in circles, using its claws to fend off the attacks, clearly on the defensive.

“The three of them seem to have scattered!” Mo Xing said as he launched more ice blades, keeping an eye on the trio.

“That’s not a bad thing—it increases their chances of escape!” Shi Yan analyzed.

“Yeah.” Mo Xing agreed. “Still, this wolf’s hide is so thick! It doesn’t even look hurt!”

“Keep attacking!” Shi Yan said. “No matter how strong the defense, there’s always a weak point!”

“Right!” Mo Xing nodded. Suddenly, urgent footsteps approached, and someone ran over.

“Help!” the person shouted.

“Xiao Feng?” Mo Xing frowned, recognizing the dirt-covered figure.

“Mo... Mo Xing!” Xiao Feng was startled. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m on a mission!” Mo Xing shrugged. “Actually, I should be asking you that!”

“Mo Xing, stay focused! Keep attacking!” Shi Yan shot a quick glance over, then fired off more Explosive Double Shots at the giant wolf.

“Right!” Mo Xing turned back, hurling more ice blades in that direction.

“Wow! There’s even a pretty girl here!” Xiao Feng’s eyes lit up as he noticed Shi Yan by Mo Xing’s side, shining like a beacon in the night.

“Aim for its tail,” Shi Yan instructed Mo Xing, ignoring Xiao Feng.

“All right!” Mo Xing kept slashing at the giant wolf’s tail. This time, the beast reacted violently, as if he’d struck a vital spot, and it grew even more ferocious.

“Is it that I, Xiao Feng, am unlucky in love, or is it that the pretty girl is just too focused on fighting monsters to say hello...” Xiao Feng muttered, staring at Mo Xing, unsure whether to feel envious or jealous.

“Xiao Feng! You got here first!” came a female voice from not far away, accompanied by rushing footsteps.

Mo Xing frowned, the voice sounded oddly familiar, but he couldn’t place it. He didn’t have time to look back, with a massive monster still looming three hundred meters ahead.

But then, something truly dramatic happened...

“Wait—isn’t that my idol!” the girl exclaimed.

Mo Xing looked back in surprise and saw it was Li Xiangcao!

What was going on?

Weren’t only he and Wu Danche, the two freshmen, selected by the school to join the hundred upperclassmen for the Dragon Tooth Island aid mission?

Xiao Feng and Li Xiangcao weren’t even on the list, were they?

How did they end up here?

And meeting up in such a dramatic fashion?

“Awooo—” The giant wolf let out a thunderous howl, its blood-red eyes swinging toward Mo Xing.

“Not good! It’s noticed us,” Shi Yan frowned. “Mo Xing, go wake Wu Danche and the others!”

“What? Okay!” Mo Xing leapt down from the rock and sprinted toward the tents.

“Wait, didn’t the old man say this was the safest area? How did we get spotted?” Xiao Feng cried.

“That’s because all of you ran over here and the giant wolf caught your scent!” Shi Yan replied without looking back, still firing at the beast.

“Don’t blame us! If you hadn’t kept shooting at it, would it have noticed us?” Li Xiangcao shouted.

“What do you mean? If I hadn’t fired to hold it off, would you have escaped here safely?” Shi Yan shot her a glare.

That glare was enough! Under the moonlight, the two girls recognized each other from a previous fight sparked by Mo Xing—a memory neither could forget.

“It’s you!” Li Xiangcao exclaimed.

“Yes, it’s me!” Shi Yan frowned. “I’m more curious how you ended up here!”

“Is that not allowed?” Li Xiangcao shot back.

“What do you think?” Shi Yan shrugged.

“Ladies, let’s all calm down!” Sensing the tension, Xiao Feng quickly tried to mediate.

“What’s going on?” Ling Buyu rushed out of the tent with Mo Xing, followed by Dongjun, who was still half-asleep, rubbing her eyes.

Ling Buyu glanced at Shi Yan with her twin guns, the two unfamiliar faces, and the howling wolf in the distance, and was momentarily lost.

“No time to explain,” Shi Yan turned around. “That giant wolf is almost here. Get your weapons and prepare to fight!”

No sooner had she spoken than a massive figure leapt up behind her.

“Awooo—”
