“First, clean his wound with some liquor.” Lin Shize began giving orders to Zhao Dahu.

The wound had bled excessively, yet even with the burning alcohol, Gou Dan felt no pain.

He even watched as Lin Shize carefully stitched his own belly with silk thread.

Lin Shize stitched three layers in total, then casually tore off a reed stalk, dipped it in the liquor, and inserted it into the wound.

Blood trickled down the reed onto the ground. Thus, the first surgical operation in the Great Qi Dynasty was officially complete!

Finally, he wiped the wound once more with the alcohol and rewrapped it with sterilized hemp cloth.

Since the weather was cold, the wound was less likely to become inflamed—a small mercy amid misfortune.

Lin Shize pulled a silver ingot from the backpack he had retrieved from Liu Wu and placed it into Gou Dan’s hand.

“See this silver? If you survive, it’s yours. But if you die, someone else will have it. If you’re struggling, just look at this silver.”

Gou Dan nodded weakly, clutching the silver tightly.

Liu Wu came in and saw Gou Dan lying on the bed, the clean hemp cloth stained with no blood.

“Chief, how’s Gou Dan?”

Lin Shize replied, “He should be fine. Let him rest a bit.”

“Good, as long as he’s alright.”

Walking out, Lin Shize saw Gou Dan’s wife anxiously waiting by the door.

He called her over and said, “There’s a bottle of liquor inside. If Gou Dan gets a fever, rub the alcohol under his armpits, inside his thighs, on his head and neck.”

“As long as he pulls through, he’ll be fine.”

Gou Dan’s wife immediately knelt down, weeping as she bowed her head, “Thank you, sir. You saved his life. I’m forever grateful.”

Lin Shize hastily helped her up.

“Enough, we’re brothers—no need for formalities. Go.”

Others saw that though Gou Dan’s face was pale, his chest rose and fell faintly, a sign he was still alive.

They had all seen injuries like this; even at the field hospital, it was often a death sentence.

Yet Lin Shize had managed to save him in less than an hour.

Liu Wu said, “Amazing, Chief, you really know how to treat wounds.”

Lin Shize gave a bitter smile. “I don’t really know much about treating wounds. I just disinfected and stitched him up. Whether he lives or dies depends on him.”

“What did the camp say?”

Liu Wu replied, “The higher-ups were very pleased with your military achievements and have appointed you as a commander. Here’s your commander’s badge.”

Liu Wu pulled out an iron plaque from his pocket and handed it to Lin Shize.

Lin Shize glanced at the badge and put it away, then asked, “What about our rewards?”

Liu Wu said, “I only brought back some silver and a few bags of grain. As for other rewards, we couldn’t carry them. They’ll probably be sent after the military merits are reported.”

Lin Shize nodded. “Now that we have warhorses, next time we’ll ride them into battle. Too bad a few horses scattered during the fight today, otherwise each of us could have had two mounts.”

“Chief, I’m just grateful to have any warhorses at all. Our GreatI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
