Chapter 78: Novice
Outside the third-floor weapons and equipment room.
“We’re here,” Matsukawa let out a sigh of relief. In the face of Su Yi’s combat skills, all the zombies encountered from the tenth floor to the third had been dispatched one by one. While it wasn’t exactly silent, it hadn’t alerted more of the undead.
The door to the equipment room was locked, though not at a high-security level. After all, before the apocalypse, this was the weapons storage of the Kyoto Police Headquarters. No petty thief would dare set their sights here, and the room was frequently accessed in normal times.
Su Yi twisted the lock with his hand and opened the door to the weapons room.
Inside, rows of weapons were displayed on the racks in dazzling array.
A single glance told Su Yi all he needed to know: pistols, rifles, sniper rifles—every kind of light weapon one could expect.
Of course, it was limited to just these, as only police-issue arms were kept here.
Matsukawa and Ryoko Hashimoto looked visibly excited. The sheer number of weapons filled them with a sense of security.
“Pick out whatever suits you,” Su Yi said to Matsukawa and Ryoko Hashimoto.
“Yes, Su Yi!” Having witnessed Su Yi’s abilities along the way, Matsukawa, once an elite officer, was completely convinced.
“Yes, Lord Su Yi!” The two began choosing, but soon Ryoko Hashimoto accepted Matsukawa’s suggestions.
Each selected several pistols and fixed them to their bodies with holsters.
In addition, both Matsukawa and Ryoko Hashimoto slung a submachine gun over their shoulders and carried grenades with them.
Once they had finished selecting, Su Yi once again used his storage ability.
Grenades, submachine guns, and matching magazines disappeared one by one from the racks.
Su Yi didn’t bother with assault rifles or pistols; their firepower and rate of fire didn’t satisfy him.
“What is this?” Matsukawa was stunned to see items vanish into thin air. He quickly realized what such an ability implied.
He grew excited.
Su Yi soon stopped what he was doing.
Seeing Matsukawa’s baffled expression, Su Yi explained, “My ability can only store so much.”
That was already impressive enough.
The group left the weapons room, and under Su Yi’s lead, headed for the rooftop.
Back on the rooftop, Su Yi was the first to approach the helicopters parked on the helipad.
“How did you get here?” Matsukawa asked Ryoko Hashimoto.
“Lord Su Yi flew me here,” she replied, a subtle, inexplicable pride curling her lips.
“Flew—!” Matsukawa drew in a sharp breath, once more astounded by the breadth of Su Yi’s abilities.
“Su Yi, you mean to…?” Matsukawa jogged over to Su Yi’s side.
“I’m going to try flying these helicopters.”
“Su Yi, have you ever learned how to pilot a helicopter?” Matsukawa was surprised. Su Yi’s powers were indeed formidable, but piloting a helicopter was another matter altogether. Before the disaster, very few people in the world possessed such skills—either professional pilots or wealthy, idle heirs.
Though Matsukawa didn’t know the foreigner’s background, his experience and intuition as a veteran police officer suggested Su Yi was unlikely to be some rich young master.
As for being a professional pilot, the odds seemed even lower.
“No, but I’m a pretty good driver,” Su Yi replied calmly.
Matsukawa was speechless. Was driving a car the same as flying a helicopter?
He took a deep breath and said, “Su Yi, I’ve had helicopter pilot training—though that was six years ago.”
Su Yi looked at him in surprise, not expecting such a skill.
He patted Matsukawa on the shoulder.
“Good, then you can walk me through the controls in a bit.”
Opening the helicopter’s cockpit, Matsukawa explained the functions of the control panel to Su Yi.
In reality, the hardest part of learning to fly a helicopter was passing the theory exam, which covered meteorology, aerodynamics, flight principles, aviation medicine, and more.
Matsukawa had received thorough training, but under the current circumstances, he could only give Su Yi a concise explanation of the essentials.
Su Yi listened, inwardly impressed. Matsukawa’s explanation was clear and incisive. Coupled with the fact that he’d survived two months alone at police headquarters and was an excellent marksman, he was a truly outstanding talent.
After listening to Matsukawa, Su Yi took the pilot’s seat to familiarize himself with the controls, pedals, and various buttons.
Once he’d gone over everything in his mind, Su Yi had Matsukawa remain in the cockpit, while Ryoko Hashimoto sat in the rear compartment.
Su Yi slid open the partition between cockpit and cabin, then started the rotor.
As the blades spun faster and faster, the helicopter slowly lifted off with a whoosh.
Sensing Matsukawa and Ryoko Hashimoto’s nervousness, Su Yi reassured them, “Don’t worry. At worst, we’ll just crash. Before that happens, I’ll make sure you both get out safely.”
With a pull on the control stick, the helicopter shot into the sky.
