Su Yi and Ryoko Hashimoto left the building.

He let Ryoko climb onto his back, making their next movements easier.

“Lord Su Yi’s back feels so safe,” the girl mused inwardly.

With a leap, Su Yi cleared the building entirely.

Following the route Ryoko provided, he moved from rooftop to rooftop, pausing and proceeding as necessary.

“Ah!” Ryoko suddenly cried out from his back.

“What’s wrong?” Su Yi asked.

Ryoko, a bit embarrassed, said, “It’s nothing, Lord Su Yi. I just happened to see the shopping area below where I usually buy clothes.”

Su Yi understood her thoughts at once.

“Shall we go down and take a look?”

“Really? Is that okay?” Ryoko’s voice brimmed with delight.

Su Yi descended swiftly along the building’s curtain wall. As they neared a lower floor, he tapped his toes lightly to slow their fall.

Throughout the descent, Ryoko clung tightly to him, the thrill of free-fall leaving her breathless.

Su Yi pressed his palm against a pane of glass—silently, it crumbled to powder. He stepped inside with Ryoko still on his back.

Immediately, several ghouls turned to face them. Unlike before, these creatures bared their fangs and charged.

“Hold on tight!”

“Okay!”

Su Yi rushed forward as well.

After questioning the others about the past two months, Su Yi already knew that the ghouls could not infect normal humans; an encounter meant either killing them or being eaten.

He leapt lightly, tapping the heads of two ghouls as he passed overhead. A surge of inner energy burst through their bodies, liquefying their brains and shattering their hearts.

Ryoko watched in shock as the ghouls collapsed, never to rise again.

Su Yi vaulted another ten feet and dispatched two more with the same ease.

Sweeping the floor like a whirlwind, he found no further threats and finally set Ryoko down.

“Lord Su Yi, are they really dead?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“But, didn’t the emergency broadcasts say that ghouls are hard to kill, and only attacks to the head or heart can destroy them?”

“I used a kind of energy to invade their bodies. These ones are truly dead.”

“Ah, I see. Sorry for asking so many questions,” Ryoko said, sticking out her tongue in embarrassment.

“Now, go pick out some clothes you like, and choose some for Naho Matsushima and Shota Yamada as well.”

“Yes, sir.”

Ryoko’s steps grew lighter; even under the shadow of apocalypse, her mood brightened.

While she wandered among the displays, Su Yi left her to it and found a men’s clothing store. He casually swept the clothes from the racks into his storage space, then entered the changing room.

When he emerged, the makeshift curtain he’d used as clothing was gone, replaced by jeans and a crisp white shirt—simple and neat. He now wore sneakers too, sparing himself the need to expend energy to avoid injury.

Ryoko reappeared, dressed in a bright yellow lace blouse with wide sleeves and a black miniskirt—her youthful charm radiating in full force.

Seeing Su Yi’s new look, her eyes lit up, and she covered her mouth with a smile. Her arms were filled with bags, mostly for herself, though she hadn’t forgotten to pick up items for the others.

“Let me take those,” Su Yi offered, sweeping all the bags into his storage space with a gesture.

Though she’d witnessed his mysterious abilities before, Ryoko was still amazed.

“Let’s continue with our plan.”

Once more, Ryoko climbed onto Su Yi’s back, and the two soared out from the broken window.

Passing through several former bustling districts, they finally arrived at the Kyoto Library, as Ryoko had suggested.

The largest public library in the country stood beside a park, its white-tiled façade half-hidden in greenery.

The grounds were wide open, with thousands of ghouls milling about.

Su Yi rose higher into the air to avoid detection and landed with Ryoko on the library roof. From there, they slipped through a fifth-floor window.

According to Ryoko, though the library housed millions of volumes, each floor specialized in different categories. By her experience, the fifth floor held what they sought.

Su Yi set Ryoko down and led the way.

A dozen ghouls roamed this level. Su Yi dispatched them quietly and efficiently.

Ryoko, holding her breath, watched him handle the threat with effortless grace before focusing on searching for maps.

“I found one!”

Su Yi took the map she offered and spread it open.

“Let’s see if there are any others,” he said.

“Okay, Lord Su Yi.”

Soon, Ryoko brought several more maps, one of which was especially detailed and recent.

At last, Su Yi nodded with satisfaction. With maps in hand, reaching their intended destination would be much easier.

Following the maps, they arrived at the National Police Headquarters.

Sticking to his strategy, Su Yi landed directly on the rooftop.

To his surprise, there were three helicopters still on the helipad.

With these, transporting supplies or evacuating people would be far more convenient.

Su Yi wasn’t concerned about how to operate these flying machines. He was confident he could earn a license in no time, and if there were differences from other vehicles, well, crashing a few should sort it out.

Setting that matter aside, he began to sweep the building.

Near the roof, he found scraps of clothing and bone fragments—a clear sign that, at the disaster’s onset, someone had tried to reach the helicopters to escape, only to fall prey to the ghouls.

Soon, they encountered the first wave of ghouls.

These creatures, their uniforms faded beyond recognition, were no match for Su Yi.

He retrieved several pistols from their bodies and turned them over in his hands.

During his school years, Su Yi had undergone shooting practice during military training in middle school, high school, and university. He quickly familiarized himself with the pistols’ mechanisms.

“Take this. I’ll teach you.”

He handed a pistol to Ryoko and instructed her in its use.

Bold and quick-witted, Ryoko soon got the hang of it, though she accidentally fired a shot. The loud bang startled her, and she almost dropped the weapon.

Luckily, Su Yi steadied her hand.

She stared in shock at the black bullet mark on the pristine wall, her face pale.

“Damn, now we’re in trouble!”

From below, sounds echoed—they had alerted the ghouls on the lower floors, who were now rushing upward.

“It’s fine—gives us a chance to test our marksmanship,” Su Yi said calmly.

Even as he spoke, black shapes burst around the corner of the stairwell.
